The Sixers have given up a valuable badet to occupy two more places in the draft Markelle Fultz No. 1 in the overall standings.
It was a bold move by Bryan Colangelo and, apart from the hot reports, will be the enduring mark of the former CEO.
Elton Brand is now the managing director of the Sixers. He did not decide to do business with Danny Ainge, who seemed to know he was selling damaged goods. He did not give up an unprotected first-round pick belonging to a perpetually bad team (although perhaps ultimately improving).
If Brand had to trade Fultz for a basketball bag – which has been suggested a lot of fans – that would not be an accusation against him. His predecessor is the one who is still linked to this agreement.
Brand's legacy is now tied to Jimmy Butler. Until now, these returns are impressive. Butler is a stand-alone player on standby, so signing this off-season will also fall to Brand. The terms of this long-term deal, Butler's steady progress with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons and, of course, the overall success of the team will be Brand's legacy.
If he exchanges Fultz against 37-year-old Kyle Korver, he will not be blamed for not getting the proper value for a guy who had been the first overall pick a year ago. He will probably be congratulated for having managed to get out of an unpleasant situation and to be able to keep a sniper capable of helping his stars to speak.
If he manages to acquire a Trevor Ariza from the Suns, it will be considered a master stroke at this stage. Get a two-way wing that can improve your test bench and eventually help you reach your lofty goals for a discontented 20-year-old who has lost his replacement role in favor of T.J. McConnell? Yes, it's a win for Brand.
It is time to separate from what Colangelo has abandoned to acquire Fultz and to focus on what he is right now. He has a lot of trouble shooting, whether it's the shoulder, the wrist, the thumb or the head. He is essentially trying to get out of a winning situation with a coach who has left him a starting point. Not a lot of GMs are going to line up to buy that.
It's sad to get there. When we learned the night of the lottery that the Celtics would be the first to be chosen, I was pissed off to think that Ainge would get Fultz. After making the biggest fleece in the sport since Jerry Jones got a king's ransom for Herschel Walker, the Celtics would now get a guy I thought was a star.
He could very well become one. It does not seem like Philadelphia is where this will happen.
And none of that concerns Elton Brand.
