CALGARY – An ex-girlfriend of a Calgary man on trial for double murder said that Edward Downey wanted to bring her into the escorts business.

Downey, 48, is charged with first degree murder in the deaths of Sara Baillie and her five-year-old daughter Taliyah Marsman in 2016.

Attorney Carla MacPhail said in her opening statement that Baillie was a close friend of the ex-girlfriend, unidentifiable due to a publication ban.

MacPhail suggested to Downey to blame Baillie for breaking the relationship and refusing his girlfriend then to work for him as an escort.

The ex-girlfriend, who testified behind a screen for not having to deal with Downey, told the court that she was financially supporting Downey at the time and that the funds were going into miss at the end of their relationship.

It was at that time that Downey asked her if she wanted to escort and they put an ad online.

She explained that Downey was angry at her on a trip to Edmonton to serve clients and she became ill.

"He was not happy about that," she says. "I came to work and it did not happen."

She decided that she no longer wanted to try to escort.

MacPhail asked him why.

"Because I could not do it," she replied.
