Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos knows what he's winning with Josh Donaldson … or at least he knows what he's doing could be get.
The Braves signed a one-year, $ 23 million contract with the third base player on Monday, and Anthopoulos thinks it could be a good deal if Donaldson regained the form that had seen him win three consecutive appearances within a star earlier in his career.
Donaldson, 33, finished in the top eight in the 2013 to 2016 player ranking, after winning the AL MVP in 2015 after his first season in Toronto. During this period, he recorded an average of 693.5 appearances at the plate and missed only 19 games.
The two seasons that have pbaded since then have been different, as the Bringer of Rain had to contend with persistent injuries that limited it to 496 appearances in 2017 and only 219 appearances in 2018 split between the Blue Jays and the Cleveland Indians .
"Of course, with the injuries of recent years, there is an element of risk – and especially with what happened last year – but the way it came back to the end of the year." The year was very similar to that of the Donaldson at the end of 2017, when Anthopoulos said Tuesday during an appearance in the US press Prime Time Sports. "He hit the ball hard, he had good attackers."
Anthopoulos acquired Donaldson for the second time during this decade. He did so in November 2014, while he was General Manager of the Blue Jays and had an exchange with Oakland Athletics. The Blue Jays have made two round trips to the ALCS after landing at Donaldson, which Anthopoulos hopes to replicate.
"We bet on the fact that we think it's going to be healthy and that we can keep it on the ground," said Anthopoulos. "We think there's a very good chance we'll get Josh Donaldson and one of the best players in the game."
In addition to being back with Anthopoulos, Donaldson is also meeting with former Blue Jays coaches George Poulis and Mike Frostad, with whom he has a strong relationship.
