Prime Minister Doug Ford announced Wednesday morning his plan to rebuild West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby.

The Prime Minister held the announcement at the hospital, promising an immediate grant of $ 500,000 to fund "early planning".

"I am here today to engage with the good people of West Niagara: we will build you the hospital you need," Ford said.

"You have the best front-line health care staff – nurses, doctors, support workers here in Niagara – they are all fantastic, but you need a facility that helps you do your job. your best. "

Ford said the surgical and obstetrical services would not be removed from the hospital, as feared by locals, for more than two years from the New Year.

The government also announced that it would pay $ 8.5 million for "immediate improvements to the infrastructure while planning work is underway for the redevelopment of the hospital."

According to Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), it would take approximately $ 8.6 million to the hospital to rebuild the surgical facilities to meet the standards set by Accreditation Canada.

HHS said it had requested a grant and approval from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in early November and that "the facility will likely require renovations before reconstruction to maintain patient safety."

A document published by HHS in November stated that they would wait for the Ford government's decision on financing reconstruction.
