It seems that the Galaxy S10 is not equipped with the most advanced feature of the iPhone – BGR

Samsung's next flagship phone will bring us even closer to the smartphone design of our dreams. Samsung has already unveiled a series of new versions of its Infinity screen that bring us all closer to a smartphone without a bezel. In addition, a host of reports in recent weeks have all said the same thing, namely that the Galaxy S10 would have a new Infinity-O screen, the screen design with a hole for the selfie camera that will be d & # 39; first introduced on the Galaxy A8 and on a future Huawei phone. But can the design of the Galaxy S10 also support facial 3D face ID type recognition?

Apple's latest iPhone models, such as the iPhone XS and XR, all have notches at the top because they all support facial identity, a feature that requires a large number of sensors and cameras:

Here is another illustration that explains the purpose of each component:

Drilling a single hole in the display would not be enough for the identity of the face. However, Samsung manufactures at least four separate versions of the Galaxy S10, and at least one of them will have a dual lens front camera, according to recent reports. A second camera will require an extra hole in the screen, but that does not necessarily mean that Samsung will use the dual camera configuration for 3D face recognition. After all, Google has installed two front cameras on the Pixel 3 to allow larger selfies and not to activate facial identity.

As we saw above, Face ID requires a spotlight and an illuminator. But what is interesting in the rumors about the Galaxy S10, especially those coming from Korea, is that they provide all kinds of details. For example, a story of TheElec A few days ago, it was mentioned for the first time that Samsung will use Hole in Active Area (HIAA) technology to make Galaxy S10 displays and that a solid state laser pumped by Diode (DPSS) will be required for drilling. According to the same report, Samsung Display will drill two holes of different sizes in the panel for the purpose of the front camera and infrared (IR) sensor. The report stated that the proximity sensor, light sensor, and LED status indicator were all under the screen – this is what the current sensor configuration on Galaxy S9 phones looks like:

Why would the Galaxy S10 need an infrared sensor if it does not support advanced 3D face scanning? Assuming the report is accurate, the screen may not have enough holes to accommodate other visible components in Apple's slot. TheElec did not specify which versions of the Galaxy S10 would be equipped with two HIAA holes, but the reports that followed also mentioned the technology, saying that HIAA OLED screens would remain exclusive to Samsung for a while.

I would also like to point out that although we saw the so-called Galaxy S10 screen protectors in the wild, all the leaks revealed protectors suitable for single-hole screens.

But find a mid-January report that Apple's 2019 iPhones will have a smaller notch thanks to an innovation that would allow Apple to combine the FaceTime camera with the infrared camera. As a result, the size of the notch would be reduced significantly, although components such as the spotlight and the illuminator are still needed.

While this may allow Face ID to work with Infinity-O displays, does Samsung really need 3D facial recognition of the Galaxy S10 now? Has the Korean giant been able to bypbad the blockade of Apple's supply chain with its own Face ID innovations that would identify it on a device that only has a few holes in it? 39 screen rather than a complete hack?

Not to mention that Samsung has developed an integrated fingerprint technology more sophisticated than that offered by other Android providers. It is said that the Galaxy S10 has an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen instead of an optical sensor. It is possible that the facial identity is not even necessary on a phone with a fast fingerprint sensor under the screen. In addition, the Galaxy S10 phones apparently do not have iris recognition cameras, which seems to indicate that the facial identity is not in the cards. Early reports said the phone would support facial identity, but the 3D rumor has not been recognized recently in rumors of the Galaxy S10.

Huawei's Mate 20 Pro has both facial identity support via a screen similar to an iPhone and a built-in optical fingerprint sensor. And Samsung may not want to be seen as a company that can not compete with the work of its biggest Android rival, especially given what Huawei has done recently.
