BEFORE CHRIST. One group calls for increased sea lion catches to slow population growth

[ad_1]

A non-profit group in British Columbia is calling for the extension of Aboriginal hunting rights to limit the growing number of sea lions invading the shores of Vancouver Island.

The Pacific Balance Pinniped Society considers mammals as an invasive species that ravages the local fishing industry.

Thomas Sewid, a member of the group, says that First Nations communities should be allowed to capture more sea lions. He adds that meat can be eaten and that fat can be used in nutritional supplements.

Nick Templeman, owner of Campbell River Whale Watching, who opposes the idea, says that sea lions do little harm to the local fishing industry and think that killer whales will naturally kill the sea lion population.

CTV Vancouver Island contacted the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for comments but did not respond until the broadcast time.
