Canadian diplomats stationed in Cuba are allowed to return home after another employee has fallen ill mysteriously.
Eight employees and five children reported unexplained symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and problems with concentration. American diplomats in Havana also became ill.
Staff members stationed in Cuba will now have the opportunity to return to Canada "if they wish," said Wednesday the Department of World Affairs in a statement.
Officials confirmed the latest case after performing medical tests on the individual, who is only identified as an employee. The employee is now receiving "the necessary medical care," said Global Affairs.
In response, the government is sending a group of federal officials to Cuba next week to "review Canada's current operations and determine how to further reduce risks for our diplomatic staff," said Global Affairs.
Canada is already actively working with US and Cuban authorities to resolve this mystery, and an RCMP investigation into this matter is underway.
Officials originally accused a targeted sonic attack, but this explanation has since been ruled out.
"To date, no cause has been identified. This remains the case today, "said Global Affairs.
There is no evidence that Canadian travelers are in danger, said Global Affairs.
In April, the government announced that dependents would no longer join diplomats in Cuba because of the risk.
