As buyers flock to SUVs and pickup trucks instead of sedans, automakers are unveiling their latest offerings for the growing market of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Companies that specialize in making smaller SUVs are now making more spacious models and competing for technological features that enhance safety and enjoyment.

Some of the newer models virtually monitor drivers for signs of drowsiness and ensure that children or pets do not accidentally stay inside the car, while others scrutinize the road in front of the driver to adjust the suspension if the driver is about to hit a pothole.

Jeep, which has not manufactured a pickup truck for more than a quarter century, is back in the growing mid-size pickup segment with the Gladiator, a truck based on the iconic Wrangler.

The van, unveiled Wednesday at the LA Auto Show, features two rows of seats and a 5-foot-long bed that can carry 4-in-8 drywall sheets or two motocross bikes to full size with folding tailgate.

It is equipped for off-road driving and can tow a Fiat Chrysler 285 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine. A 3-liter diesel engine arrives later. The Gladiator will be on sale in April. The price has not been announced.

As a middle child to prove that it's different, the latest Honda SUV is larger than the popular CR-V compact and smaller than the three-row Pilot.

Honda calls it the most robust of its light trucks, highlighting its ability to get off the road in difficult conditions, including sand, snow and ice, while remaining comfortable for everyday driving.

The Pbadport is equipped with a 280 horsepower V6 engine and can tow up to 5,000 pounds in AWD.

Honda did not reveal the fuel consumption nor the price.

If you start falling asleep at the wheel, the new Mazda 3 will let you know. The advanced driver monitoring system uses infrared cameras and LEDs to monitor the driver's eyelids and the angle of the mouth and face to detect signs of fatigue or inattention. It triggers an alert when it detects that the situation has become dangerous.

Its new design reduces blind spots in the driver's field of vision.

There will also be a new knee airbag for the driver's seat to help reduce leg and chest injuries.

Mazda expects increased fuel economy with the addition of i-ACTIV AWD, but mileage has not yet been released. The award will be announced in early 2019 when it goes on sale in North America.

The latest Lincoln luxury mid-size SUV will "greet you on your knees", lowering its frame as the driver approaches to facilitate the inside climb or cargo loading. It allows the driver to use a smartphone as a key, which can record the driver's preferences such as the positions of the mirror, the seat and the steering column.

The three-row SUV offers a choice of electric gas or hybrid powertrains. The gasoline engine delivers 400 horsepower and the hybrid engine with the Grand Touring option offers 450 horsepower.

Inspired by theft, the car can detect potholes or uneven bumps and adjust the suspension for a smoother ride.

The price and consumption of gasoline have not been published.

The new Kia Soul compact crossovers retain the iconic boxy look of the Kia and are available with a gasoline or fully electric engine. The Soul EV is powered by a 64 kWh battery with fast DC charging equipment.

The range of the electric vehicle is still determined by battery tests and the results are expected by early 2019. A four-level intelligent recuperative braking system allows drivers to choose to optimize smoothness or efficiency.

The three-row, eight-pbadenger mid-size SUV is designed for family travel. An optional rear occupant warning system is designed to ensure that drivers do not forget children or pets at the rear of the car by monitoring rear seat motions after the driver exits, emitting a beep and sending an alert on his smartphone.

It features spacious second and third rows and vents that provide airflow to pbadengers in the back row. A wireless charging block is available to reduce clutter. There are seven USB sockets.
