A police officer from the Niagara region was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and the Special Investigations Unit was called following the shooting of two police officers in the Niagara region.
This happened in Pelham, Ontario, about 30 minutes west of Niagara Falls.
"Paramedics carried a wounded officer," the Niagara police said in a brief statement.
The UES confirmed in a tweet that a police officer had been seriously injured as a result of a "shootings involving police".
In another tweet, the UES confirmed that one of the police officers had been shot and wounded as part of an "interaction between two officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service."
A spokesman for the Ornge Air Ambulance stated that they had transported a person in critical condition to a hospital in Hamilton, but they did not confirm whether this person was the injured agent.
The police stated that she could not provide any additional details since the SIU had invoked its mandate.
The SIU is an independent body that is called upon to investigate whenever police are involved in death, serious injury or allegations of badual badault.
The Roland Road was closed between Effingham Street and Sulfur Spring Drive, as a result of a police investigation, the city of Pelham announced.
Prior to the incident, the Niagara Regional Police had tweeted that officers would be on this part of the road on Thursday morning for an investigation.
A local report said police were on site to gather evidence of an impaired driving incident that occurred on the night of November 12.
The SIU is investigating a shooting in Pelham involving the police. An officer was seriously injured. More details to come.
