Half a dozen Albertans died after contracting this year's flu virus.
According to Alberta Health Services, 1,241 cases of influenza were confirmed in the Calgary area on Nov. 29 – although it is likely that many others became ill and n & # 39; They did not consult their doctor.
People with the virus in Calgary account for more than half of the 1,985 confirmed cases in Alberta. Of the six Albertans who died of the flu, five were from Calgary.
This alarming statistic comes after the 92 deaths last year related to the flu in the province and more than 9,000 confirmed cases.
AHS will publish weekly confirmed case tracking data, locations, deaths related to the spread of the virus, and more. According to the fourth week of data, published on November 29, 293 Calgarians were admitted to the hospital with the flu.
Alberta Influenza Season 2018/2019 (Alberta Health Services)
The data show that a similar number of people between Edmonton and Calgary were vaccinated (342,429 in Edmonton, 413,152 in Calgary). However, more than four times more Calgarians have already contracted the flu this season.
The clinics have been administering the free vaccine for more than a month to more than 410,000 people in Calgary, although this represents just over 33% of the total population.
Recent years have shown a steady increase in the number of influenza vaccines administered. Given that the 2018/2019 influenza season is still in its infancy, the one million vaccines already administered in Alberta represent a significant improvement over previous years.
Vaccinations are available free of charge to all Calgary residents over the age of five, in any AHS clinic, pharmacist or doctor.
