A pilot on P.E.I. The RCMP said the situation was very close to a "major tragedy" on Tuesday.

The police are looking for the driver of a white Jeep Cherokee who, she says, has pbaded in front of a stopped school bus and almost hit a child.

The incident occurred around 7:50 am Tuesday.

Const. Jeff Wright, East Prince RCMP, said the school bus was stopped on the Trans-Canada Highway in Albany, Prince Edward Island, with its flashing red lights and its signboard. 39, stop deployed. He added that the driver had narrowly missed a six-year-old who was crossing the highway to get on the school bus.

"The potential of these incidents is huge, and yesterday could have been a major tragedy," Wright said.

"The driver himself told me that he had been driving a bus in this area for 22 years and that it was the worst he had ever seen. Stop on the side of the road for several minutes to allow himself to calm down.He was so excited, it was so close. "

Wright said the jeep had swerved in an alley where the child's mother was before leaving.

"I would imagine that it would be very traumatic for the mother who was standing up and watching the child cross the road in what would normally be a daily routine during the school year," Wright said.

The RCMP is still looking for other witnesses.
