Thérèse Okoumou was identified as the woman who climbed the Statue of Liberty in New York on Independence Day
She and about half a dozen protesters were arrested Wednesday after a long time confrontation with the police
. Protesters had deployed a banner calling on the US government to abolish the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

. Live television caught her and officers climbed cautiously around the statue before descending a ladder that brought her to about 25 feet from the statue's observer.
There, she was arrested.

Okoumou was one of 40 protesters engaged in a demonstration where some unraveled a banner that said "abolish ICE," said Jay Walker of Rise and Resist, the group that staged the protest.
His rise was not part of the protest that they had planned, he said.
the protest forced the evacuation of the Statue of Liberty; and a spokesman for the National Park Service felt sorry for the people who had not had the opportunity to visit the monument.
