A man who was charged with murder in Burnaby more than one Ten years ago, the RCMP was finally arrested in South Korea and was extradited to Canada last week.
In January 2006, the Burnaby RCMP responded to a parking lot at 3355 North Road where two men were shot and wounded. Shaoxin Zhang, 19, has pbaded away.
The integrated homicide investigation team resumed the case and quickly identified Jui-Kai Weng, then 28 years old and formerly known as Lee-Chia "Kenny" Weng, as a suspect. Weng was charged with second degree murder and attempted murder the same year.
When investigators learned that Weng had fled to Taiwan shortly after the shooting, a red notice from Interpol was issued for his arrest
. Huang Sheng "Leo" Tang has been charged with and found guilty of obstructing justice for his role in the incident.
On March 16, 2018, homicide investigators were informed of Weng's arrest in South Korea. Three months later, South Korean justice officials granted Weng's extradition to Canada to face criminal charges.
On Friday, IHIT investigators arrived in Vancouver with Weng, expected in British Columbia. Tuesday, Provincial Court
"IHIT is grateful for the help provided by all its domestic partners as well as its partnership with South Korean law enforcement," said the Cpl. Frank Jang of IHIT
"IHIT and its many partners pledge to bring to justice those accused of the most heinous crimes."
