A transient killer whale in the Comox Valley worries BC authorities

A 27-year-old orca caused a sensation in the waters off the small community of Royston, on Vancouver Island

Josie Boulding met the whale during a paddling embarkation on Thursday

"I was just paddling and all of a sudden I heard the shot, "said Boulding. "Just, whoosh !"

She said that it was a magical experience and was made even more memorable by the fact that she was captured on video.

"To catch a killer whale that closes with a The video camera was just an absolute gift," she said.

The video shows Boulding sitting on his paddle board, watching the killer whale come out of the water, a few meters from the. She can be heard screaming "Oh, my God!" Many times the show has played out.

The whale has been identified as T073B. It rises and descends usually from the coast of Alaska to northern California

But it has not been so fleeting lately, and this worries fisheries officials.

] "Even seeing a killer whale in an area for a whole day is sometimes quite unusual," Jared Towers told Fisheries and Oceans Canada. "Considering it's a pretty confined area and it's been here a week, we're very worried."

While the killer whale is known to travel alone, authorities monitor the situation and use it as an opportunity to educate the public

"There is a new regulation in place, put in place earlier this month, where there is a minimum approach distance of 200 meters for killer whales in western Canada, "said Towers
