A victim of Surrey's assault dies at the hospital after fleeing the police

Homicide investigators are asking the public for help in trying to understand what led to the death of a victim of aggression who fled to the crime scene and mysteriously arrived at the scene. Hospital half a day later.

Surrey RCMP took part in an badault around 104 Avenue and King George Boulevard at 2:45 pm Sunday. The victim, who has since been identified as Wesley Dean Rideout, escaped before the police arrived and could not be found.

Nearly 12 hours later, the Mounted Police said they had been contacted by the BC Coroners Service and learned that Rideout had died at the hospital. We do not know how Rideout got there or why it took so long.

In a statement released Monday, the integrated homicide investigation team said that Rideout was known to the police and that the badault was not random.

"We believe that some people are aware of Mr. Rideout's activities on the night of his badault," said Capt. David Lee said in the statement. "We ask anyone with information or videos in the vicinity of 104 Avenue and King George Boulevard to immediately contact IHIT."

With the help of the RCMP and the corner service, IHIT is currently investigating the scene and looking for witnesses in the vicinity, as well as a video surveillance of the incident .
