A woman was killed in an accident on Highway 401, five people were taken to the hospital and the driver is charged

A man was charged after the death of a woman in a crushing accident involving a single vehicle on Saturday on Highway 401 eastbound near Montreal Street in Kingston.

Police arrived at the scene around 7:30 am and discovered that a van had left the road, pbaded a guardrail and struck a rock face.

A 56-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene and the remaining five occupants of the van were taken to hospital by ambulance for evaluation. The police did not disclose the victim's identity, claiming that the next of kin had not been warned.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, the driver of the vehicle was charged with reckless driving causing death, police said.

It has not been identified.

A dozen first responder vehicles were on scene, including Ontario Provincial Police and Kingston Police, Kingston Fire Services and paramedics.

Highway 401 reopened shortly after 3pm.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police at 613-372-1932.
