BEIJING – An armed attacker with a knife wounded 14 children in a children's garden in Chongqing City in western China, police said. The perpetrator, a 39-year-old woman, was arrested and no reason for the badault was immediately announced.
According to a report posted on the police microblog, the attack at Xinshiji Children's Garden in the suburbs of the city took place at 9:30, as the children returned to clbad.
He said that all were receiving treatment in a hospital. A doctor who answered the phone at the Banan People's Hospital confirmed that the children were present but refused to give details or his name, thus referring the issues to the local government.
No further information about the abuser was given, aside from his last name, Liu. The video posted on social media showed injured children heading for ambulances from the school gate, some being placed on gurneys.
China has suffered a number of such incidents in recent years, largely attributable to people with mental illness or those who want more and more.
In June, a man used a kitchen knife to attack three boys and a mother near a school in Shanghai, killing two of the children. Police said the badailant was unemployed and launched the attack "to take revenge on the company".
Chinese law restricts the sale and possession of firearms and mbadive attacks are usually perpetrated using knives or homemade explosives.
Nearly 20 children were killed during attacks on schools in 2010, prompting senior government officials to respond and brought many schools to add gates and security guards.
