LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Accelerate stopped Gunnevera from winning the $ 6 million Breeders' Cup Clbadic on Saturday, while Canada's Shamrock Rose took over the $ 1 million Filly & Mare Sprint dollars earlier in the day.
Owners Penny and Manfred Conrad of Wellesley, Ont., Watched Shamrock Rose win her fourth straight race to open the big day of racing. Trained by Mark Cbade, a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, Shamrock Rose recently participated in the Breeders' Cup.
The owners paid $ 130,000 to allow Shamrock Rose to race after another win in Keeneland on October 20th.
"I thought his race at Keeneland was exceptional," said Cbade. "I thought she was very good out. But the man on my left (Manfred Conrad) and his wife Penny, I owe it to them, they argued – it was not said, but she was not nominated at the Breeders' Cup, have therefore completed. It was $ 130,000 for them. They trusted me so much and I appreciate it. And I knew it was a big job, but she's an exceptional filly.
Shamrock Rose's winning streak also included the Lorgnette Stakes on September 8 at Woodbine in Toronto. She won 25-1 at the Breeders' Cup.
The clbadic lacked Justify's retirement, winner of the 2018 Triple Crown, and left a very open field as Accelerate, a 5-year-old, eventually pbaded after separating from position # 14 as a favorite. Accelerate made a radical move in the far turn and was in charge of the top of the sequence. He then battled Gunnevera for a fifth consecutive victory in Grade 1 and a sixth of seven total wins this year.
Coach John Sadler won his first Breeders' Cup victory since his first appearance 30 years ago.
In terms of speeding up to be elected the best thoroughbred of this year, Sadler said he would leave that to the sports writers who will vote for the Eclipse Awards. He noted, however, his own bias.
"For me, he's definitely the horse of the year," said Sadler. "He won all those big races. Winning the Santa Anita Handicap (in March) was for me probably one or two on my list.
"The Clbadic is a new race, but a great race, and it has won in a vivid way. He is just an excellent horse and had a great year. "
Ridden by Joel Rosario, Accelerate traveled 1 1/4 miles in 2: 02.93 and paid $ 7.40, $ 6 and $ 4.40.
"It really broke," Rosario said of Accelerate. "I was on the outside and I had to use it a little bit. I just wanted to get a job because I was very far away. I know I had a long race at the turn but I wanted to be not too wide.
"When I got to the back, I tried to be clear, and that's what he likes to do."
The triumph of the Clbadic culminated in the success of the Jockey Breeders' Cup, which also won Game Winner and Jaywalk Friday, respectively in the juvenile and juvenile fillies.
Gunnevera reported $ 21.80 and $ 11.80, while Thunder Snow paid $ 8 to redeem himself at Churchill Downs after finishing last in the 2017 Kentucky Derby.
West Coast and McKinzie duo Bob Baffert, Hall of Fame Trainer, was also present. They finished seventh and twelfth, respectively, after the difficult Accelerate screenings in the prestigious championship race at the end of the season.
Gunnevera, Thunder Snow and Mendelssohn, the starting time, made things interesting in a large open field, an advantage for the absence of the 13th winner of the Clbadic Horse races. Justify's ankle problem led Baffert to withdraw his 3-year-old son in July, eliminating the opportunity to follow the winner of the 2015 Triple Crown, American Pharoah, in pursuit of a rare grand slam.
Accelerate was describing his fourth consecutive race and was answering the question of whether he could continue riding after beating the West Coast by a length of 2 1/4 in the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita. And he followed other notable performances on the second day of the championships at $ 30 million.
Monomoy Girl strengthened her case as the best 3-year-old filly by winning the $ 2 million Distaff. The expected duel between Kentucky Oaks title winner and his predecessor, Abel Tasman, in 2017, never materialized, while Monomoy Girl moved him on the final lap and defeated Wow Cat. A length for his sixth win of the season.
Peter Miller marked the history of the Breeders 'Cup by becoming the first coach to host two recurring winners in the same Breeders' Cup events. Shortly after Stormy Liberal defeated his favorite World of Trouble to take the Turf Sprint by the neck, Roy H, 6, swept Promises Fulfilled and took a 3 1/4 win in the Sprint. Jockey Paco Lopez won his first Breeder Cup win.
Enable followed last month's Arc de Triomphe victory by winning Turf's $ 4 million by 3/4 on Magical. The 4-year-old British filly became the first horse to win the two prestigious races the same year. She won her 10th career out of 11 career starts.
