According to MP, Trudeau is "very skinny" for leaving Burnaby South and Jagmeet Singh without a by-election date

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is denying Burnaby South residents the right to political representation in Ottawa, according to NDP MP Peter Julian.

The NDP was waiting for Trudeau to call a by-election for the seat vacated by Kennedy Stewart (now Vancouver Mayor), but the Prime Minister summoned only one by-election. for a seat in Ontario.

There are currently four vacant seats in Parliament, but Trudeau has only triggered a by-election – Leeds – Grenville – Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, an Ontario riding with no MPs since the death of Conservative Gord Brown in May .

The Prime Minister has 180 days after the release of a seat to call a by-election. The deadline for Brown's siege was in a few days but Stewart resigned on September 14, leaving Trudeau until March to call a vote in Burnaby South.

Traditionally, prime ministers have called by-elections for all vacant seats at the same time and, says Julian, Trudeau breaks a historic precedent for delaying a vote in which NDP leader Jagmeet Singh hopes to win his first seat at the polls. Parliament.

"It's an unprecedented experience, very lean and manipulative," Julian said.

NDP supporters lined up Royal Oak Avenue on Sunday afternoon for a "shave of Burma" in support of Singh's bid for the bid. What was planned as a rally after the early announcement of the election date turned into a protest against Trudeau's decision, said Julian.

"We are going to pressure Mr. Trudeau to organize this by-election so that the people of Burnaby South have a say," he said.

Julian said the NDP would continue to campaign for Singh.

Singh himself was not in town on Sunday. A party representative previously told the NOW that he had other commitments in Toronto.

the NOW asked the Prime Minister's Office for a statement in which he explained why Trudeau had not called the South Burnaby by-elections.

The full statement reads as follows: "The deadline for the by-election called today is the end of the month, and the others have only been released more recently."
