Adjournment granted for a semi-accused driver charged in the Humboldt Broncos bus accident

The semiconductor lawyer accused in the bus accident Humboldt Broncos has been granted an adjournment when appearing in court Tuesday morning.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 29, is charged with 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 other counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm in the fatal accident.

His lawyer, Satnam Aujla, told the judge that he had spoken to the prosecution and asked "that the case be adjourned … for election and plea".

Sidhu was not present and his next appearance is scheduled for November 27.

He is not required to appear in court at this stage of the proceedings.

Sixteen people were killed and 13 injured when the bus carrying the Broncos in a playoff game and a semi-trailer collided on April 6 at an intersection in eastern Saskatchewan.

Two previous appearances had been adjourned after Sidhu's lawyer had asked for more time to review the evidence.

Sidhu can opt for the case to be heard in a provincial court, or choose to seize a superior court. In this case, a preliminary investigation will be conducted to determine if there is sufficient evidence that it can be judged.

If he chooses to go to a superior court, Sidhu can choose whether the case will be heard by a judge alone or by a judge and jury.

Dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 14 years, while dangerous driving causing bodily harm carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.

Accident in Humboldt: driver could be sentenced to 14 years in prison

Sidhu appeared for the first time in court on July 10 and was released on bail of $ 1,000 with a number of conditions. He must reside at his home in Calgary, abide by a curfew, be subject to a driving ban and surrender his pbadport.

The owner of the Alberta company he was driving for is also facing charges.

Sukhmander Singh, of the Adesh Deol Trucking group, is facing charges of non-compliance with various federal and provincial safety regulations.

The charges were laid on October 10 following an investigation by Alberta Transportation. They included failure to keep track of drivers' hours of service, checking a driver's compliance with safety rules, and keeping more than one diary a day.

Singh is scheduled to appear in court on November 9 in Calgary.
