A rescue dog adopted last summer by a Colwood woman was seized and is under evaluation after biting three people early Saturday.

The RCMP stated that paramedics responded to a request for a dog attack at a 3000 block house in Pickford Road around 12:30 pm. Several people, including children, were at home at that time.

Kyla Johnson, 22, lives in the basement of the house with her fiancé. She said she adopted Rex, a four-year-old pit bull, last summer.

She needed three stitches after the dog bit her both arms, leg and belly.

Johnson said people were visiting and playing a Tour of Duty video game. Some people drank beer and became noisy.

She said her father was still losing and shouting, and Rex was angry.

Johnson said that she told everyone to calm down and Rex was installed. But her father tried to mistreat Rex, she said, and the dog bit his arm.

She tried to remove the dog and got bitten. At that moment, everyone shouted and Rex bit at least one other person.

Other members of his family living upstairs were alarmed and evacuated the entire house.

Johnson called the police, but said that when she came out of a window to meet them, it was not out of fear of Rex. She wanted to ask the officers not to shoot him.

Rex has always been "a good dog," she said.

Johnson added that she knew, when she adopted the rescued dog, that she needed to be careful. She now thinks Rex may have been abused in the past.

The RCMP stated that none of the children in the house had been injured, but that the Ministry of Childhood and Family had been contacted to review the incident.

A by-law officer had to use a control pole to capture the dog.

A man was arrested after removing his shirt and trying to fight with officers, the police said.
