North America and Eurasia were three times fewer than in the past.
When we look at a modern map, it seems to us that North America or Eurasia is slightly larger than Africa. In fact, this is not the case. Africa is three times more northern continents.
The American scientist Neil Kay finally corrected this age-old mistake on the basis of the US weather service. His map shows the true size of the Nordic countries. It turns out that this is not the case, including Canada and Greenland, as big as we thought.

Gerardus Mercator, the Flemish cartographer, published a map of the world for explorers in 1596. The scientist Fleming tried to solve the problem that faced the cartographers for centuries: how to place the device in a spherical world? Until 1595, the shape of the cards was incredibly different – from hearts to cones. In the end, all this has shaped the diversity that has supplanted the Mercator card that is familiar to everyone from school to school. The continents have the correct shape, but their sizes are distorted. The closer you get to the north, the greater the distortion.
Neil Kay, a meteorological climatologist, created a precise world map using Ggplot (program visualization) and stereographic projection. He suffered the spherical world on a plane and discovered that the countries of the Northern Hemisphere are much less numerous than we thought.
Gerardus Mercator, unlike other geographers of his time, has traveled little. All his knowledge was gleaned from books and maps drawn by other scientists. He published his atlas in 1595 and named it after the Greek titan who holds the sky on his shoulders.
According to his map, the Scandinavian countries seem larger than India, whereas in reality India is three times more.
