Amazon Web Services unveiled its own "Graviton" server processors, offering cheaper and more efficient computing options.
In the past, Amazon used almost exclusively Intel Xeon chips. The use of its own chips allows it to reduce its dependence on Intel.
Amazon is using its Israel-based Annapurna Labs startup to develop Graviton chips, which will use the ARM technology commonly used in mobile phones.
This is a particularly remarkable development in the technological space, since Intel's processors manage more than 98% of the world's servers. Intel's customers include major companies such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM.
Because of its dominant position in the server processor industry, Intel has been able to charge higher prices to its customers. However, using its own chips, Amazon claims to be able to reduce costs by 45%, depending on the technological workload.
