OTTAWA – Conservative leader Andrew Scheer's campaign for the post of prime minister next year will get some power from businessman Kevin O'Leary, announced Monday in Toronto.
O'Leary ran against Scheer for the leadership of the Conservative party before retiring and supporting Scheer's main rival Maxime Bernier. But now, O'Leary and Scheer have joined forces in hopes of defeating the Liberals in 2019.
The two men held a question and answer session at Ryerson University with students and other conservative members to show their partnership.
"We need a new director, we need a new government, we need a new policy. That's why he's here, "O'Leary said at one point, pointing to Scheer," and we're going to do that all over the country. "
O'Leary said the country needed to be spared by "weak managers".
"The whole cabinet is weak," he said. "It's a spatula that we need. … Scratch and start again.
For his part, Scheer told the audience that he liked talking about bringing a "positive conservative vision" to Canadians. Under him, the party still ranks second in opinion polls, far ahead of the New Democrats, but rarely defying the Liberals for first place.
"We are going to lay off and we are going to hire," O'Leary said of the government's conservative plan. "I'm so motivated to go out and make this change happen because I feel it. I feel the wind of change. "
Brock Harrison, a spokesman for Scheer, said that it was expected that the duo would organize more events at the same time.
If Bernier is upset by the relationship between his former rival and his former supporter, he did not show it Monday. He left the Conservative Party, calling him "morally corrupt". He said Mr. O. Leary had supported the Conservative Party's bid but not his new movement, the People's Party.

Tim Powers, Conservative Strategist and Vice President of Summa Strategies in Ottawa, said that if Scheer could learn from O'Leary, the Conservative party would benefit from his appearances.

According to Powers, the alliance also carries risks, for example if O'Leary eclipses Scheer's personality.
