STRONG POINTS
- Android 9 Pie still works in less than 0.1% of the total number of active devices
- Android Oreo is 21.5%
- Android Nougat remains at the top with 28.2%
Google has released its latest Android distribution numbers for October and, surprisingly, we still see no sign of Android 9 Pie. The latest version of Android has been available for nearly three months and has since been extended to include Pixel, Essential Phone, OnePlus 6 and Nokia 7 Plus phones. It seems that the total number of phones using Pie is still quite low, because the version has not yet entered the graph. The numbers end with Android Oreo, which is growing steadily and is now the second most used Android version.
It is well known that adopting a new version of Android is a slow and tedious process, but it was hoped that with Google's Android 9 Pie and Project Treble, the adoption rate would increase. However, Pie still has to break the 0.1% mark, which means we may have to wait another month before we can start. We expect that the numbers will really start to increase as soon as the new phones will be available with Android 9 Pie, like the Sony Xperia XZ3, Pixel 3 and the future OnePlus 6T.
Android Oreo, by contrast, is experiencing a faster adoption rate in recent months. The Android versions 8.0 and 8.1 now combine 21.5% of the total number of active devices, exceeding Android Marshmallow to 21.3% and now becoming the second most used Android version. Meanwhile, Android Nougat remains at the top with 28.2%, down slightly from 29.3% last month.
Behind Marshmallow, we have Android Lollipop which is currently present in 17.9% of the total active devices. Android 4.4 follows Kitkat at 7.6%, while Android Jelly Bean runs on 3% of active devices. Near the end and still alive, Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Android Gingerbread at 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.
