With iOS 12
Apple
Here's everything you need to know …
Who is it for?
iOS 12.1 works on all iOS 11 compatible devices. This means that the iPhone 5S or later, the iPad mini 2 or later and the 6th generation iPod touch or later, but that It has some reservations (see below).
Compatible devices will automatically be prompted to upgrade. But if that does not happen, you can trigger it by going to Settings> General> Software Update. Apple iOS 12.1.1 beta testers (more about this in the end), you have to Unwind your device for iOS 12.1 to appear.
IOS 12.1 is a feature-rich update of up to 500 MB. I say "up to" because different devices have different updates, so it will be much smaller on the old iPhone and iPad.
The Deal Breakers
Jailbreakers, yes all four, iOS 12.1 will delete your jailbreaks. With jailbreaker software increasingly lagging behind, you could wait for months before your jailbreaking software of choice catches up. Be warned.
What about the first iOS 12.1 issues? Certainly, there are some concerns.
The most important comes from a security perspective where a Spanish hacker showed A critical flaw that bypbades lockscreen security. This needs to be corrected and I hope that the release of iOS 12.1.1 will be accelerated to combat it.
Elsewhere, brilliant research blog PiunikaWeb discovered strange, graphic menu problems and animation bugs. There are also problems with WiFi connectivity (1,2,3) and e-mails are not sent for a certain number of users (for example 1,2,3,4,5) There are also a lot of complaints about the battery life (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,ten etc.) but I would stay calm about it just in case reindexation.
So what do you get?
Apple's official release notes describe iOS 12.1 as follows:
"IOS 12.1 introduces Group FaceTime, adds more than 70 new emoji and supports dual SIM with eSIM for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. This update also includes bug fixes and improvements. "
You can find out more about these features in Feature Guide for my iOS 12.1. But there are some warnings about these new features. In particular, the FaceTime group has excludes millions of iPhones and iPad, and most major carriers have announced the support of the dual SIM card it will not happen until 2019.
Also note:
Control of the depth of the camera – This allows iPhones to adjust the depth of field (blur level) of the background of portraits. The first results look great and it's an important catch-up for Samsung's Galaxy lineup and Google's new pixels.
New Emoji – More than 70 new emoji arrive with iOS 12.1, including characters of different hair colors and not even hair at all. You will also find new sports, animals and updates for popular emojis.
Apple has also provided important fixes in iOS 12.1. Notable is a correction for BeautyGate, a selfie camera problem in the new iPhone XS (details), iPhone XS Max (details) and iPhone XR (details) Just as important is the iMessage bug fix that aggregated conversations when users shared the same ID (often with embarrbading results)
More negatively, iOS 12.1 controversially introduced potential performance of iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X last year to protect their batteries.
Looking at security, Apple official security page lists no less than 24 vulnerabilities fixed in iOS 12.1. These are spread over Contacts, FaceTime, Messages, Notes, Safari Reader, VoiceOver, WebKit and WiFi.
Apple's verdict iOS 12.1: upgrade but caution
This warning is due to the gaping security flaw already discovered in iOS 12.1 and the resulting pressure for Apple to quickly release iOS 12.1.1. WiFi and the reliability of e-mails are also questionable for some users.
That said, iOS 12.1 has enough new features to make it understandable that users want to upgrade now and the BeautyGate and iMessage patches are important for many owners. iPhone and iPad.
As always, I will keep this article up to date. Be sure to check before upgrading. As new devices are updated, new problems are always discovered.
The way forward – Apple iOS 12.1.1
As I already mentioned, Apple will be under pressure to release iOS 12.1.1 to fix the security vulnerability in iOS 12.1 and the first beta version of this minor update is already available.
We do not know when it will happen, but I would expect Apple to publish it before December.
