James Favel, executive director of Bear Clan Patrol, said the York Factory First Nation had asked the group to go to York Landing, in northern Manitoba, on the lookout for the community.
Bear Clan Patrol is a group of non-violent volunteers originally founded in Winnipeg to help keep the Aboriginal community safe in 1992.
Favel said seven members traveled to York Landing, a town of about 400 inhabitants, and spotted two strange men corresponding to the descriptions of Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky near the dump around 4:15 pm. local hour.
"They meet two men who fit the description of the two wanted suspects," Favel told Black Press Media by phone.
"They seemed to be recovering food from the dump."
