Two people are seriously injured after the crash of a bus north of Prince George on Thursday afternoon.

The bus was carrying a total of 40 people. Cap. Craig Douglbad, Prince George RCMP, said the accident had occurred on Highway 97 North, near Mitchell Road, about 22 kilometers north of the city, around 4:45 pm . PT. He said the bus was the only vehicle involved in the accident.

Libby Brown, of the British Columbia Emergency Health Service, said 16 people had been transported to the hospital and 16 of them had been seriously injured to serious.

She added that the remaining pbadengers had sustained life-threatening injuries and that 16 people had been treated at the scene and did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Slippery conditions

Vern Lecerf, a mechanic working at Canfor's polar sawmill, said the bus was filled with workers coming from Prince George to work at the factory.

Snow flurries have covered the area today, but buses still operate normally under these conditions.

"Just because there are still two feet of snow on the ground, you still have to come to work," Lecerf said.

Cap. Douglbad says roads are extremely slippery and travel is not advised. The road is closed because the police are investigating the scene and it is not known when it will reopen.
