CALGARY – One of Canada's largest medical cannabis companies has an agreement with Shopify for the online sale of medicinal and recreational cannabis.

Aurora Cannabis, headquartered in Edmonton, will move its online sales platform developed by Shopify, the company said in a statement on Monday. Doing so would help Aurora quickly increase its distribution.

"The Shopify platform will enable Aurora to deliver a personalized customer experience that adapts to the unique demands of consumers and regulators, tailored to the specific needs of the different jurisdictions in which Aurora operates," said Loren. Padelford, vice president of Shopify, in the release.

However, it is unclear whether the agreement will be permitted under Alberta's cannabis regulations.

In the province, only one website managed by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, Albertacannabis.org, is authorized to sell recreational cannabis. The launch will coincide with the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada in October.
