A woman and her 10-month-old daughter died after apparently being attacked by a grizzly bear, officials said.
In a statement, the Yukon Coroner's Office announced that Valérie Théorêt, 37, and her baby, Adele Roesholt, had died Monday.
"It was devastating. At first, I simply could not believe it, "said Verena Koenig, friend of Theoret.
According to the statement, it appears that mother, baby and father Gjermund Roesholt have been trapped in the Lake Einarson area over the past three months.
Gjermund told the Mounted Police that he had been trapped during the day. Back in the family cabin, he was charged with a grizzly bear.
He was forced to kill him, he told the Mayo RCMP. Then, as he approached the cabin, he found the bodies of his wife and daughter.
It is believed that they were out for a walk when the bear approached Monday, between 10am and 3pm.
We remember Theoret for his warm and cheerful personality. She was a French immersion teacher at Whitehorse Elementary School and was an active member of the Franco community.
"She was so full of love and amazing," Koenig said. "She was so happy to have a baby and to be a mother."
Koenig said that Theoret and his partner were "experienced bush people" and that they have been locked up in this area for three years.
Mounted Police and the Yukon Environment Department badist the coroner in ongoing investigations.
The Yukon RCMP and the Yukon Coroner Service are investigating the deaths of two people following an alleged attack on November 26, northeast of Mayo, near the TN border. -O. Environment Yukon is participating in the survey. More information will be available soon.
