Rocco Baldelli has emerged as the main candidate to become the 14th manager in the Twins' story Wednesday night, and an announcement on his hiring is expected today.
Twins coach Derek Shelton is no longer in the running for the position, said a major league source. Baldelli, Shelton and Brandon Hyde, the coach of the Cubs, are presumed to be the top three candidates to replace Paul Molitor, sacked.
Major League Baseball smiles on teams that make important announcements on days when World Series games are played, but will give permission to make announcements on days off. There is no match on Thursday as the series head to Los Angeles, where the Dodgers are behind the Red Sox 2-0.
Baldelli, the coordinator of the Tampa Bay Rays Major League, had his second interview with the Twins on Monday. James Rowson, coach of the Shelton, Hyde, and Twins strikes, was also interviewed by Twins baseball chief Derek Falvey and general manager Thad Levine.
Baldelli, 37, would be the first manager hired by the Twins in another organization since Ray Miller after the 1984 season. Tom Kelly was a coach when he was named to that position during the 1986 season. Ron Gardenhire was Kelly's coach until his taking over in 2002. Molitor worked in the organization from 2005 until he replaced Gardenhire as a result of the 2014 season.
Baldelli could offer a completely new perspective after working with a Rays organization that has surprised many people by going 90-72 in 2018.
Choosing the first round (sixth overall) by the Rays in 2000 after high school, Baldelli finished third in the US AHL rookie vote in 2003, but was forced to retire in 2010, at 29, because of a muscle disorder. He worked for four years at the front office of the Rays, then became the first coach of the Rays in 2015.
He can connect with young players and understands the importance of badysis, features that seem to be more important in today's game. And the Twins were not the only ones watching Baldelli because he reportedly interviewed five vacant management positions since the end of the season.
It is unclear how the rest of the coaching staff would eliminate under Baldelli. A club source Wednesday was waiting for a turnover of staff. Shelton was very popular as a coach on the bench and he worked with Baldelli in Tampa Bay to stay in the same position.
It is also questionable whether Eddie Guardado, the Bullpen coach, popular with Twins pitchers, or third baseman Gene Glynn would be reinstated. Garvin Alston was in his first season as a pitching coach and Rowson in his second season as a batting coach.
On Sunday, two other teams filled management positions, Cincinnati (David Bell) and Angels (Brad Ausmus). Toronto, Texas, Baltimore and the Twins have openings; The only team Baldelli did not talk to is Baltimore, who selects a general manager before interviewing executive candidates.
