BBB Warning Illegal "Sister Secret" Gift Exchange

This is the modern version of the old system of "chain letters".

The Bureau of Business Ethics warns the public against an illegal exchange of gifts that circulates on social media.

The "Secret Sister" gift exchange and similar invitations have appeared, especially in 2015, and are circulating again on social media, but especially on Facebook.

The Business Ethics Office says that the "Secret Sister" and other gift exchanges are pyramid schemes and should be ignored because pyramid schemes are illegal in Canada.

Kristin Matthews, BBB's Marketing Communications Specialist, said the article said that if you buy a gift worth 10 dollars to a stranger, you will receive back up to 36 gifts.

As a result, six friends invite six other friends, all of whom send gifts to this participant in slot 1, before their name is removed. This process is repeated with the participant in position # 2, and so on.

According to Matthews, the numbers are rising rapidly thanks to personal connections on social media, users constantly sharing them, without realizing that it was a scam. The Business Ethics Office says that if you receive an invitation to join a pyramid scheme, especially a system involving money or gifts, ignore it.
