A couple who died together after being hit by a freight train in BC on Sunday had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary together.
90-year-old Christian Wantke and 88-year-old Irmgard Wantke died after their car stopped on a Canadian Pacific track in Langley, BC, about 50 kilometers away. East of Vancouver.
The granddaughter Kristi Martins described the couple as being dedicated to their family and to each other. She said that they celebrated their birthday in September.
The RCMP stated that the car had been stopped on the track when a pbading arm fell. A westbound CN rail line struck the vehicle, pushing it for more than one kilometer.
Sgt. Langley RCMP member David Brown told CTV Vancouver that the first responders had tried to save the couple.
Police continue to investigate what happened. A mechanical problem or medical episode has not been ruled out.
Langley Deputy Fire Chief Brian Godlonton said the first responders were trained in similar accidents last month in the city.
"Unfortunately, it happens too often," he said.
The province is installing signs at several key intersections to warn drivers of arriving trains earlier.
