VANCOUVER – Some 33 students and staff from two French-language schools at the center of a measles outbreak in Vancouver have been ordered to stay home because they have not provided proof of vaccination.

Vancouver Coastal Health reports that eight measles cases have been confirmed at Jules Verne High School and École Rose-des-Vents.

Spokesperson Tiffany Akins said the two schools had measles vaccination rates of around 70 percent before the outbreak.

According to her, health authority staff were able to confirm the vaccination records of a larger number of students in the light of the outbreak, bringing the rate to about 95%.

But she says that the 33 students and staff who were sent home have been unable to provide this documentation or are still refusing to vaccinate.

Akins adds that individuals will be allowed to return to schools if there are no new cases of measles in institutions by March 7.
