Big Sugar bassist Gary Lowe, 65, dead after a battle with cancer

TORONTO – Garry Lowe, bbadist of Canadian rock / reggae band Big Sugar, has died.

According to a statement released by the group, Lowe died early Saturday morning after two years of fighting cancer.

The statement says Lowe "has long been admired and admired not only for his extensive musical talents, particularly with Gordie Johnson and Big Sugar, but also for his contagious energies of love, humanity, humor and kindness."

In Kingston, Jamaica, Lowe moved to Canada in 1976 at the age of 22 and began playing bbad with reggae legend Jackie Mittoo. He joined Big Sugar in 1994, touring and recording with the band.

"We lost our dear brother and sweet friend Garry this morning," says Johnson in the release. "He was my greatest musical collaborator, our wisest elder and we were fortunate to be together on the road of life."

Lowe was 65 years old.
