Blizzard apologizes for the South Korean Overwatch streamer that carried Blackface
During a recent show on the official Blizzard Twitch channel, a South Korean content creator decided to present some of Overwatch's cosplay, choosing Doomfist as his favorite character. Unfortunately, he decided to do it in the form of a blackface. Since the outcry among fans, Blizzard has not been slow to apologize.
In an Overwatch cosplay segment on the official Blizzard Twitch channel, South Korean content creator Kim "Binbon" Jin Young is wearing makeup to badume the role of Overwatch's African hero, Doomfist. This behavior shocked fans around the world, pointing out that Kim's cosplay was considered a blackface. If you do not have a clear idea of what blackface is, it's the darkening of the skin, a practice that was originally used as a way for non-black artists to imitate the Black. Although blackface is something that is now very frowned upon, it did not stop some, like Kim, from participating in the practice. As happened on Blizzard's official Twitch channel, social media fans criticized the developer for the whole segment. Now, Blizzard has issued an official statement about the incident that occurred in the Korean official stream. A Blizzard representative told Dot Esports: "What happened on the official Korean channel was inappropriate and obviously did not fit the global spirit of Overwatch. We apologize for this insensitivity and are taking steps to ensure that everyone on the region's official programs in the region is more aware of the offensive nature of blackface makeup around the world. "
