CALGARY – The Calgary Flames adopted an unconventional winning formula Saturday night.
For the fifth time this season, Calgary trailed after two periods as the expanding Flames faced off for a 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Of the remaining 30 NHL teams, only Anaheim (two) won more than once when she lost after the second break.
Sean Monahan led the Flames with two goals.
Matthew Tkachuk, Michael Frolik, with the winner of the match, and Mikael Backlund, in an empty goal, also scored for the Flames (9-5-1), who have won four straight victories. Calgary will play next Wednesday when she begins a trip to California to Anaheim.
Jonathan Toews, with Career Goal 300, Jan Rutta and Brandon Saad scored for the Blackhawks (6-6-3), who lost all three games on their road trip in the West from Canada. They will only be back in action Thursday, when they will receive Carolina.
The decisive goal of Frolik was scored at 15:05 of the third period. His pbad under the goal line deviated from a player and overtook Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford.
It was Frolik 's seventh goal, scoring only 10 times last year.
After pressing the entire period, Monahan finished tied at 13:59 of the third, when he perfectly converted a cross ice pbad against Johnny Gaudreau. Monahan extended his point series to six games (four goals, six badists).
Tkachuk had the Flames in the other at 18:26 of the second.
Flames goaltender David Rittich took the win to improve to 4-1-0. It has only been tested 15 times.
Crawford, who was the victim of 40 shots, including 18 in the third, was defeated. He fell to 3-4-0.
Chicago took the 3-1 advantage in front when Saad split the Flames defense and, despite Mark Giordano's behind harbadment, his shot was imposed by Rittich's pads.
The Blackhawks took their first lead with 27 seconds left in the first period. Rutta simulated a slapshot to escape Garnet Hathaway's slip, then waved his hand in the crowd and pbaded Rittich high on the side of his blocker.
Chicago tied at 13:57 of the first. Travis Hamonic's retribution penalty put the Blackhawks on a 1:10 power play and took advantage of Toews' eighth goal.
Calgary opened the scoring at 4:46 on the power play when Monahan completed a quick pbading sequence like lightning.
The Flames had the advantage of a five-minute advantage when Duncan Keith was sentenced to a major boarding and game misconduct a little over two minutes later, when his shot from behind on Dillon Dube sent the rookie head first in the table.
Dube left the ice alone, but very slowly. He did not return.
The advantage of five minutes was then increased by 1:47 on a mistake of the Blackhawks. Chicago had no one in the penalty box to serve the penalty, so when it expired, the Blackhawks had to keep playing with a small man. But Calgary could not take advantage of it.
