Canada's Women's Hockey Team beats Sweden 6-1 at Four Nations Cup

SASKATOON – Mélodie Daoust scored two goals in Canada's 6-1 win over Sweden at the women's four-nation cup hockey tournament on Tuesday.

Sarah Fillier scored in her national team debut and Laura Stacey was outnumbered for the host nation at SaskTel Center.

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin and Hamilton defender Laura Fortino completed the mark for Canada.

Rebecca Johnson scored for three goals. Goalkeeper Shannon Szabados stopped 17 of 18 shots for the win.

Emma Nordin scored a power play goal for Sweden in the third period. Goalkeeper Lovisa Selander, 22, stopped 46 of 52 shots on her first start to her country.

Canada will meet the reigning United States champion in a preliminary round match on Wednesday.

It will be their first game since the Americans defeated the Canadians 3-2 in a shootout for the Olympic gold in February.

The two countries with the best records at the end of the round robin meet for Saturday's final. The third and fourth seeds will play for bronze.

Former national team defender Ylva Martinsen has been named coach of a young Swedish team with five teenagers in her Four Nations team.

The Swedes struggled to generate sustained pressure in the offensive zone against Canada. Erika Grahm put the Canadian pole aside in the first period.

Earlier Tuesday, the United States scored five unanswered goals in the second period to reduce Finland 5-1.

Brianna Decker, Hilary Knight, Sarah Brodt and Dani Cameranesi each scored a goal and a pbad for American Cayla Barnes also scored for the Americans.

Maddie Rooney, who secured the US gold medal in Pyeongchang, South Korea, pushed off nine out of 10 shots to win the Finns.

Veteran goalie Noora Raty was the busiest of the two goalies, pushing 44 of 49 shots into the loss. Emma Nuutinen scored the only goal of Finland.
