The Cape Breton Capers’ quest for a second straight men’s soccer national banner came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday night.

Frederic Lajoie-Gravelle scored in double overtime which helped lift the Montreal Carabins to a 2-1 victory over Cape Breton in the U Sports championship gold medal final in Vancouver.

The final was a rematch of the 2017 gold medal game in which the Capers defeated the Carabins 3-2 in penalty kicks to claim their first national banner in men’s soccer.

Omar Kreim, on a brilliant individual effort, fed a pbad to Lajoie-Gravelle in front of the CBU net. Lajoie-Gravelle was able to fend off a Capers defender and redirect the ball past a bewildered Ben Jackson, the CBU keeper, in the 118th minute of the marathon match.

Lajoie-Gravelle was named tournament MVP.

Carabins striker Guy-Frank Essome-Penda opened the scoring 1:24 into the match when he corralled a lobbed ball from midfield and beat Jackson.

Unfazed, the Capers pressed and finally drew the equalizer from midfielder Caelann Budhoo in the 44th minute.

The teams remained scoreless through the second half and the first overtime before Kreim was able to beat two CBU defenders and find Lajoie-Gravelle for the eventual winner.

The Capers had one-last attempt late from a corner kick but the Carabins were able to deflect the ball out.

CBU advanced to the final following a 5-2 win over the Carleton Ravens in Friday’s late semifinal. Stuart Heath scored twice and Corey Bent and Mitchell Wong added singles. The Ravens also gave up an own goal.
