The police inform the public at the present time of a "public security incident" ongoing in Botwood.

Access to the community via Twomey Drive is blocked, according to an urgent press release issued by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Police confirmed that it was a clash with a Botwood man who had barricaded himself at his home and did not want to go out. Police said they reacted to a previous incident involving the man suspected of having access to a firearm.

The spokesperson for the RCMP, Capt. Jolene Garland also said that the police thought that the man was alone inside the house.

The Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP, Police Dogs and Fire Department are on hand to resolve the problem.

An RCMP emergency response team was also sent.

Central Health has asked that anyone requiring life-threatening medical care go to the Grand Falls Central Health Center until resolution of this case, access to the health center of the Grand Falls Dr. Hugh Twomey being blocked. For the moment, only emergencies will be allowed to cross the barricaded zone.

The RCMP also asked the public to be patient during this time and obey the barricades or instructions of any police officer or firefighter on the premises.

The RCMP media advisory indicated that the police would provide other updates with press release on Thursday morning.

The telegram will continue to follow this story.
