LOS ANGELES – It turns out that Olivia Colman, and not Glenn Close, was "The Favorite" at the Oscars.
The British actress was surprised the best actress Sunday night for her role as Queen Anne in "The Favorite". She beat Close, who came to Dolby Theater as a big favorite to win her first Oscar in seven nominations for "The Wife".
Instead, stunned Colman took the stage.
She looked at Close in the audience and said, "You've been my idol for so long and that's not what I wanted it to be."
Close smiles and laughs.
The 71-year-old American has a score of 0 to 7 at the Oscars. His nods remain the most winless than any other living actor. Close has begun the end of the awards season with a surge of momentum including Golden Globe wins, SAG Awards and Independent Spirit Awards.
Colman drew bursts of laughter throughout his speech. She kissed the candidate named Lady Gaga, who responded in the same way.
Colman added Oscar to his previous wins at Golden Globes, BAFTA and the National Society of Film Critics for the role.
"I can not tell you how I feel," she said behind the scenes. "Next year, I will be able to express it in words, I do not know what to do with myself for the moment."
Colman, moved, thanked her three children – aged 13, 11 and 3 – who, she said, were at her agent's in Los Angeles. She said, "It will not happen again."
A shameless colman knows where his Oscar statue will go: "In bed with me, between me and my husband, he does not know yet."
When asked what Queen Anne would say after her victory, Colman replied, "Eat cake."
The other nominees for best actress were Yalitza Aparicio for "Roma", Lady Gaga for "A Star is Born" and Melissa McCarthy's "Can you ever forgive me?"
