Conservative leader Andrew Scheer announced Saturday that he had chosen a former mayor of the region and an agricultural contractor to face Quebec MP Maxime Bernier in the 2019 election.
In his speech in Saint-Elzear, Quebec, Scheer named Richard Lehoux, former president of an badociation of Quebec municipalities and mayor of the long-standing city, candidate for the riding of Beauce.

Lehoux will take on the challenge of Bernier, the former candidate declared to the conservative party leadership, who left the party during the summer and who has since become one of his most critical critics virulent.
Scheer did not mention Bernier's name on Saturday, but chose to address Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
But he said the Conservative party was the only one able to defeat Trudeau's Liberals in next year's federal election.
"If you want to change your government in 2019, you have to vote conservative, by marking an" X "next to Richard Lehoux," he said.
Bernier announced in September that he was setting up his own party, the People's Party of Canada, to represent those who refuse the political interference of special interest groups, cartels and lobbyists.

Lehoux was mayor of Saint-Elzéar for 19 years before leaving his position to engage in agriculture in 2017. He describes himself as a former dairy farmer and said Saturday he obtained his first Conservative Party membership card in the 1980s.
In a speech, Lehoux said the Conservative party was the best party to lead the farmers and entrepreneurs of the Beauce region, whom he described as being fiercely independent and "strangled" by the state bureaucracy.
"We (Conservative Party members) are counting on the personal responsibility of the individuals and do not put any obstacles in their way for them to develop," he told the partisan crowd composed of several mayors from the region come to support him. .

Bernier was quick to respond to the bid, referring to Twitter to criticize Lehoux's connection with what he called the "dairy cartel".

In an interview with The Canadian Press, he said he was not surprised that Scheer chose a dairy producer to face him, given the manager's support of supply management.
He stated that Mr. Lehoux's priority would be to "defend the privilege of the cartel" and stated that he was eager to debate him on the issue.
