Craig Anderson, 46 times saved, leads the Senators to Sabers

OTTAWA – Craig Anderson made 46 saves as the Ottawa Senators beat the Buffalo Sabers 4-2 on Thursday in the first round of a home-and-home series.

Ryan Dzingel, Dylan DeMelo, Colin White and Bobby Ryan, for an empty goal, scored for the Senators (5-5-2), who got two badists from Thomas Chabot and Mark Stone.

Jason Pominville and Jeff Skinner scored for the Sabers (6-5-2) while Carter Hutton made 28 saves.

Buffalo almost scored the goal late in the period, but Ristolainen's shot on goal struck Anderson.

The Senators had 10 of the first 11 shots in the first but the Sabers then reacted with the next 11 of 13, with the teams finishing first with 12 shots each.

In the second, DeMelo gave the Senators a 2-0 lead as his shot hit the boards before bouncing off Hutton's back within 60 seconds.

White then gave the Senators a 3-0 lead with a power play goal at 14:47 as he had an empty net to shoot after Hutton was knocked over in the crease after being knocked down by Ristolainen.

Remarks: Erik Burgdoerfer and Mark Borowiecki were scratches for the Senators. Evan Rodrigues, Tage Thompson and Nathan Beaulieu scratched the Sabers … The Senators played in the 1,000th home game in the history of the franchise while Sabers forward Jason Pominville played his 1,000th match in the NHL.
