An intact black granite sarcophagus was unearthed two weeks ago by archaeologists from the Egyptian city of Alexandria.
Construction workers first discovered the ancient coffin, with an alabaster bust buried next to it.
The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities has appointed a group of archaeologists to open the sarcophagus carefully and find out who or what is in it.
This excited and terrified people around the world, as many thought that the coffin might contain either the lost remains of Alexander the Great or a deadly curse.
Archaeologists have carefully opened the sarcophagus, only able to lift the lid 5cm before the horrible stink forces them to close it according to the Egyptian newspaper El-Watan.
Egyptian military engineers later helped them open the sarcophagus completely – and the experts found more than expected.
Inside were the putrified remains of three people sitting in the dirty red sewer water.
"We found the bones of three people, in what looks like a family burial … Unfortunately, the mummies inside were not in the best conditions and only the bones remain" said Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme. The Council of Antiquities
Experts now believe that the three skeletons belong to Egyptian soldiers who may have worked in the time of the pharaohs.
One of the skulls appears to have cracks corresponding to an arrow wound that could have been a cause of death.
The site has now been cleaned up because there are fears that the sarcophagus will release toxic fumes according to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram.
The alabaster bust found next to the coffin is also under examination, but appears to be too faded to reveal who it was ..
