A few days before the deadline, no one knows what will happen with William Nylander and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The talented Swedish winger has up to 17h. AND December 1 to sign a contract, otherwise the restricted free agent will be considered ineligible to play during the 2018-19 NHL season.
Nylander, a 22-year-old with 135 points in 185 career NHL games, has essentially four options that could be played out by Saturday night: sign a short-term deal, sign a long-term deal, trade or stay unsigned and stay seated a full season.
No matter what happens with Nylander in the short term, his long-term future with the team that drafted him eighth overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft remains unclear.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman shared her thoughts on the matter in a court appearance before Tim and Sid.
"The only thing I think, no matter what happens, is that it will be William Nylander's final season as a Toronto Maple Leaf," Friedman said. "That he signs or does not sign, it's going to be that. And even if he signs it, I think Toronto is negotiating it at the latest.
"In one way or another, I think it's over. I would be surprised if he plays for Toronto next season. "
The salary cap in Toronto will only make things more complicated. Although they currently have plenty of space under the cap, the Maple Leafs have some pending calls for proposals that will require new deals sometime next summer. Among them are Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, both likely to reap more caps than anything Nylander has managed to do.
Friedman took note of it during the first intermission of the Leafs-Sharks game.
