Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police from Drummond / North Elmsley Township rescued a therapy dog who had lost his way in the icy waters of the Tay River.
The dog's owner called 911 shortly after 11 am to report that his dog, Teddy, had fallen into the ice about eight meters from shore and was partially submerged. The dog was hooked to the ice by the front legs, but could not get up, according to the OPP press release.
The 911 operator was able to locate the caller using the global positioning system data. Two OPP officers arrived soon after, both trained for this type of rescue.
Const. Scott McNames stayed on the ground, while Const. Maurice Lefaivre went to the dog. Lefaivre reached the dog and put Teddy in the shelter, but the ice broke and the agent became completely submerged.
McNames managed to pull the cable to bring Lefaivre back onto the ice, then onto the shore. Neither Lefaivre nor Teddy needed medical attention.
