But President Donald Trump has every confidence that Monday night, the nation's attention will be where he the wants.
After more than a week Trump will go on television in prime time to reveal his choice to occupy the seat of the Supreme Court vacated by outgoing judge Anthony Kennedy, choosing a conservative to rally Republican voters at a mid-term election. And with that, the obsessed optician will be in his comfort zone – taking a central place in a mbadive show.

Nearly 18 months after Trump started the appointment of Judge Neil Gorsuch, the star of reality became president more seasoned, more embittered and more and more comfortable exercising his will on the wheels of government and his own staff. His next show "Supreme" is the latest example of Trump's attempt to re-establish the federal bench with young conservative judges, a crusade that he believes will energize GOP voters concerned about the state of the judiciary. Trump largely follows the same scenario as when he successfully launched Gorsuch's appointment in January 2017. White House aides have strict instructions to keep secret information so that Trump himself can make the revelation. The president was delighted when Gorsuch's name did not go out very early

Yet there are differences this time. At the last go-around, the White House relied heavily on external consultants to push Gorsuch to cross the finish line. Despite the exodus of staff who left vacant key positions in the West Wing, the White House retains this time more control over the appointment and confirmation processes. A communications war room, legal staff and research was badembled in the Eisenhower Executive Office building to promote and defend the candidate.

Trump was reveled in accumulating suspense in the days leading up to his speech, offering bits and pieces of information here and there but strategically keeping the guessing game alive. Taking advantage of a public list of 25 candidates approved by conservative groups, the president's leading contenders include federal court judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman. The White House has prepared confirmation materials on all four.
Pulling the suspense the day before his announcement, Trump told reporters in New Jersey on Sunday that he "was getting very close to making a decision." He then said would be "decided tonight or tomorrow".

Previous announcements of Supreme Court candidates were not made during peak viewing hours. President Barack Obama announced the selection of Judges Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor of the White House during the day.
More than 33 million viewers watched Trump announce Gorsuch last year. The 31.3 million people who watched the latest Obama speech on the state of the Union were overshadowed by the 56.5 million who saw Obama announce the murder of the United States. Osama bin Laden in 2011, among the most watched presidential speeches of the decade. The choice of Trump's court should not be a surprise. His presidency is rife with moments of reality TV. With Trump, a Cabinet meeting becomes a free speech for the nation, and a walk to Marine One turns into an impromptu press conference. He recently walked through the White House door to participate in a live Fox News show from the alley. And his Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was organized as a mbadive media event.

In a light of administration on policy achievements, the president often considers the attention of the media – and positive headlines – as a victory in itself.
But Trump acknowledges that the choice of court offers both Douglas Brinkley, a history professor at Rice University, said the appointment had the added benefit of dominating the news, in potentially overshadowing the coverage of migrant children separated from their parents at Rice University. Border Brinkley: "It was a difficult summer until that gift that Kennedy gave him."
