The incumbent Liberal government has added three new ministers to its ranks, promoting Carol Anne Haley, Bernard Davis and Graham Letto.

After several tumultuous months and a scandal of harbadment in the House of Assembly, Premier Dwight Ball said that he had decided Thursday morning that it was time to change things.

"Today, I am very happy to announce our new cabinet," he said after a swearing-in ceremony at the St. John's Government House.

"We are adding new talent and new perspectives to our government's portfolios.

What's up?

  • Siobhan Coady retained his role as Minister of Natural Resources, but renounced his role as Minister responsible for the Status of Women.
  • Carol Anne Haley took over the portfolio of Status of Women Canada, a back-office promotion at the firm.
  • Al Hawkins is the new Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. He succeeded Dale Kirby, who had stepped down after being sacked from the caucus and cabinet.
  • Bernard Davis was also promoted to cabinet, taking over the former position of Hawkins' Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labor.
  • Graham Letto, MPP for Labrador West, is the new Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Environment. Eddie Joyce held this position when he was also ousted from Cabinet and Caucus because of allegations of intimidation and harbadment.

Call replacements

Kirby and Joyce were both cleared of harbadment and harbadment from other elected officials, but were found to have acted inappropriately.

Both MPs have been ordered to apologize to the Legislature this week, but they have kept these excuses brief.

Lt.-Gov. Judy Foote called on new ministers to meet the challenges ahead and never stop listening to their constituents.

"I encourage you all to take on your new roles forcefully," said Foote, before telling them not to forget how they did it – thanks to the vote of the people of the province.

Ball congratulated his peers and thanked Al Hawkins and Andrew Parsons for having stretched their duties to cover the vacancies left by Kirby and Joyce.

Ball said one of the biggest changes was making the Status of Women portfolio stand-alone with her own minister, who advocated the advancement of women.

"We now have a minister dedicated to advancing this work," he said.
