ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The wall that professional sports leagues in the United States have fought so hard to keep between them and legal sports betting continues to collapse.
The four major professional sports leagues fought New Jersey efforts to legalize sports betting in a case that was referred to the US Supreme Court – and ended in May when all 50 states got the right to offer sports betting.
Now, the leagues realize that sports betting can be a profitable partner and not an existential threat. The debut is fast in New Jersey, with more than 336 million bets placed since its launch in mid-June.
The latest in a series of agreements between sports leagues and gaming companies occurred Monday morning when FanDuel, the fantastic sports company and the latest newly created bookmaker, joined the National Hockey League and its New Jersey Devils franchise for sports betting and fantasy sports games.
The company has become a sportsbook partner of the league, as well as its official daily partner of fantasy sports. FanDuel will have access to the NHL's real-time verified game data feed, according to an agreement similar to what the league recently concluded with MGM Resorts International.
In agreement with the Devils, FanDuel will be on display during all regular season home games via an in-ice logo.
"We continue to be progressive in our approach to the sports betting landscape, working directly with industry and focusing on innovative opportunities for fan engagement," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
"Joining forces with the National Hockey League was the perfect next step for us as our sports betting and fantastic sports businesses continue to grow," said Matt King, CEO of FanDuel Group. "The league's clear vision for these categories and partnership marks an exciting time for both organizations."
FanDuel manages the sports book at Meadowlands Racetrack, in northern New Jersey, just outside of New York.
The company that owns the Devils, Newark, New Jersey, Prudential Center and the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association has recently made agreements with bookmaker William Hill and Caesars Entertainment for sports shows in New Jersey, as well as marketing and promotional benefits.
Earlier this year, William Hill agreed to do some promotional work and publish ratings in the Las Vegas Golden Knights arenas.
