Trudeau government increases funding to fight homelessness across the country
Federal Liberals pledge $ 1.25 billion over nine years to help more cities fight poverty
OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The Trudeau government is publishing more details on its plan to fight homelessness in Canada.
The Minister of Social Development said that starting in April, the federal government would increase the amounts distributed to communities facing homelessness. This will increase the number of communities receiving funding the following year.
By the year 2022, the federal government plans to spend $ 237 million to address this problem, double the amount allocated when the Liberals take office.
It's all part of a $ 2.2 billion, 10-year strategy called Reaching Home.
The government is also expected to present to parliament soon a bill establishing an official poverty line for the country and setting a target of halving the poverty rate by 2030.
The law would also create a poverty council to advise the minister and require annual reports to Parliament on the government's progress.
Ottawa promises dedicated funding to the territories and says there will be new spending targeted to Aboriginal people as well.
